Im already in chapter 10. This book is AMAZING! I'm really loving it and getting into the story.
I think Holden is presenting to us a new side of his personality, a deeper one. From the moment he starts talking about Jane Gallagher, who is a friend of him from a summer, we start seeing that he has feelings, his personality stops being so superficial and careless. He is really worried about what Stradlater must have done to her, which shows to us he not only cares but likes a lot this girl. We also get to know what happened to Allie, Holden's dead brother. Someone Holden really admired. He has his baseball mitt, which is full of poems and provides him a sense of innocence from my own point of view. This is a symbol to represent the end of a phase in Holden's life, something that really marked him in a pretty sever way. We can demonstrate this when he tells us about his reaction the night Allie died (he broke all of the windows of the garage with his own fist, to the point he broke several parts of it) which shows a very aggressive way of mourn. This was something his parents did not understand and wanted to have him psycoanalized after seeing his reaction. There is a symbol I found a long the story which is the hunting hat, From my point of view this represents security and a way of escaping or to isolate him self from the world around him. We also get to know Phoebe, Holden's little sister. She is some one Holden really admires and loves She helps Holden in difficult moments and is really important in his life. I really think that Holden does not have a correct perception of his own age, he always thinks and acts as an older person not a sixteen year old boy, as we can see it once he gets to New York and goes to the Lavander Room at the hotel were he tries show him self as a grown man and interacts with 3 women as well as when he is on the train going to New York and talks to Mrs. Morrow and flirts with her to the point of inviting her for a drink.
I think these are several pieces of a puzzle we have to form to really get to know Holden.
